I was in high school in the early 90’s, either it was a more innocent time or I was just a naive and backwards BY girl…. Uniforms were basically just uniforms. However, I did go to an out of town BY, so there were no bans on hairdos, makeup, or nail polish. I think less girls felt the need to try to get away with more risque stuff since they weren’t as limited.

Of course a few years later (circa my younger sisters’ high school days) things had progressed considerably….

The tznius button is right under the top button, so you don’t have to choke, and right on top of where the second button usually is, so you don’t reveal your collarbone. It’s like the 1.5th button.

Brilliant post, and so incredibly true. There was one girl in my class who always wore make-up, one day she came to class without any on, and the teacher thought she was sick beacuse of how pale she looked. Yeah, and the shoes would take up a whole ‘nother post.

I don’t know about the community as a whole, but within different sects there are definite accents.

Take the chassidim, their r’s and l’s are a little off.

When dealing with extremely yeshivish, there is a certain lilt and tune speech, much like any other accent.

You’d get those comments no matter what train you take.

When I take the train at night, early morning, anytime, or any train that doesn’t take me straight to 34th street of 5th ave, the entire community is concerned for my safety.

It’s ridiculous, it just feeds into “the goy” stereotype.
